In the early 80s, Ettore Sottsass - an Italian designer & architect - founded Memphis. This group of designers and artists would soon become known for their bright, bold, and geometric furniture designs. Their furniture would be made from many materials mixed and matched - fabrics, ceramics, metal, and glass - which begs the question of whether they were functional or decorative. One can tell that their style was inspired by the popular Art Deco & Pop Art styles that were popular during this time.
Before the collective went their separate ways after only 6 years together (which was predicted when everyone thought their designs were just a fad), they were able to create some of the most unique and unseen furniture pieces. Typically, when we think of furniture, we think of comfort and usage, but Memphis Group took the approach of making their designs fun and almost hazardous.
But despite this, the designs appealed to a certain audience and you knew that if you stepped into Duran Duran or David Bowie's house, that you'd see Memphis furniture. The Sesame Street Colors mixed with the wacky geometry would be sure to be the center of attention if it was in any living space.
Are the products of Memphis design, art, or artifacts? After viewing David Bowie's furniture collection that his estate sold, at the Modernism Museum in Mount Dora, FL, one could only dream of writing under a whimsical Tahiti Table Lamp
